At the current price, this package is fantastic value. The audio interface is adequate for recording guitar, but if you have a better interface, you can just use the hardware in this package as a dongle. The software is a fantastic value at this price. The bass amp modelers and vocal effects are worth the money alone, and the guitar amps will cover everything but extreme metal sounds. There are certainly other fine products available in this category, but the sheer range and quality of the sounds on offer here is hard to beat, and an amazing value at this price. I am a professional musician, and I was a little hesitant about buying software for recording as opposed to using a 'real' amp. After playing and recording with Amplitube 2 and Guitar Rig at a few studios, I tried Gearbox Gold, and I found that Gearbox was much easier to use than the other two programs, and had many more guitar amp and effect options, in addition to having great bass and vocal sounds (while the other two programs are significantly more expensive than Gearbox).
The easy-to-use interface and quality sounds of Gearbox make it an excellent buy in my opinion, and it saves so much hassle setting up an amp and mic (and you don't get complaints about the noise from the neighbors). When I saw the offer I thought wow, what a deal.
When I heard the Line6 amp models using it as a stand alone with headphones I was blown away. Then I tried to use it with Protools and a Mac. I ran into compatibility issues that that Line6 is blaming on Apple. The plug in works OK in Protools with the TonePort DI connected as a dongle. It doesn't sound as good as it does stand alone though by a long shot. When you try to use the Toneports outputs into a Protools DAW you get a lot of noise (pops and cracks) and sometimes it hangs up. Basically you can't use it that way no matter how you configure the Mac.
If your OK with half of what they promise buy it. If you want it as advertised look elsewhere. I have been using the Tone Port Ux1 for over a year when I decided to pick up another one. Fortunately there was this great sale that included the GX and the Gear-Box Gold.I decided to try out the plug-in side of it with Garage Band and Logic Studio. I wasn't sure exactly how it would work but WOW. Now I can change tones on all my guitar tracks if I want to, add delay or other effects without re-recording.
He heAnyway I didn't notice any difference in tone when recording the Guitar track using Gear Box stand alone, or as a plug in. I have never used the monitor outs on any of my tone ports, just the headphones. So I am not sure if the difference in tone is only an issue when using the other outs on the Toneport.I also have Amplitube 2, Metal, X-Gear, and Hendrix. But I was unable to dial in any sound that wasn't over the top. I love the harmonizer on Amplitube so, I tried to use just that as a plug in but it,Amplitube, totally sounds like crap as the plug in. Also Amplitube was not a supported plug in with Logic Studio. Let me just start off by saying that this product is a great deal.
I couldn't wait for the package to arrive at my door for nearly a week. There's a couple of issues I have noticed so far. As soon as I desperately removed the item from the box, I went through the installation process, and updating everything to the current versions took nearly 30 minutes.

This is a great value and is the best deal going for those on a budget and need both Guitar Modeling and an Audio interface.As with any bargain there concessions and this is definitely yesterday's modeling technology and the Gearbox Plug-in interface is not the greatest.
There is no ability to BPM sync to your DAW which is a strange omission.On the upside, these 'old' amp models have been and still are used in many top recording studios.Also note that the tone coming out the Montor output on the DI box and the tone of the plugin are quite different. The plugin is brighter with the monitor outs being meatier. You may not like the sound of the plugin.You could go with Amplitube 2 (and variants) which is much newer and more realistic modeling but it will cost you significantly more also. Amplitube 2 is also more costly in CPU utilization with Gearbox taking much less CPU.
If you run one instance, who cares but get to four on AT2 and you are about done. This package deal is probably the best available. I was skeptical until I actually gave the sounds a listen. For a tube tone purist like myself, it straight knocked my socks off.
Great detail and articulation. Even the high gain models sound good. You can almost hear the sag and surge of power tubes running at full voltage. It took me a little while to get it configured to my system, but Line 6 has excellent update and driver support via their website.
And I'm not a tech guy by any stretch of the imagination. The only put-off is the fact that the DI box it comes with must be hooked up to use the software even if you are using a separate recording interface. However, with tone-direct monitoring and silent noise floor you won't mind it at all. Amazing product for the home recording studio.
